TV stylist Mark Heyes, host of Bristol Fashion Week, pinpoints the top trends for this season and tells us why Bristol girls are streaks ahead in the style stakes.
Mark Heyes is bubbling over with excitement today, and it’s not just because summer’s coming. “I love coming to Bristol!,” says the Glaswegian stylist, best known for waking up the nation’s fashion senses in the mornings alongside Lorraine Kelly on LK Today. This year will be Mark’s fifth as host of Bristol Fashion Week, alongside celeb hair stylist Andrew Barton; “I love working with him. They call us the Ant & Dec of Bristol Fashion Week!”, he laughs.
Taking place from 23 – 27 March, Bristol Fashion Week offers a mix of 18 catwalk fashion shows, style advice and free beauty treats. It’s a gig Mark loves coming back to. “The Bristol Fashion Week crowd are very fashion savvy and so hungry to know what’s hot each season”.
As part of the show, Mark will offer his rundown of the top trends we’ll all be rocking in the coming months, the hottest of which, he says, is colour blocking. “There was an element of this around last summer, but people are really embracing it this year and being much bolder with their colours. We saw it all over the catwalk, most notably at Jil Sander, but also at Lanvin and Gucci.
“Basically, the brighter you can wear it, the better. You can definitely achieve this look on the high street and remember you don’t have to wear it all over – if you want to do it subtly, work it in around navy or black, or get yourself a few statement accessories in bright shades”.
Not all of the trends are as easy to pull off, however. “All white is a big trend for this season (as shown at D&G, Chanel and Chloe), but for everyday wear it can be impractical. The best way to make it work is to use neutral colours with it – there are a lot of great nude tones out there at the moment – or go for soft grey tailoring over the top of it to make it more wearable,” says Mark.
As part of next week’s shows, he’ll also be giving five lucky Bristol women a fabulous fashion makeover. “I absolutely love doing the makeovers. It’s my favourite part. There’s nothing like meeting someone who might be lacking in confidence and seeing the transformation in them when they see their new look – they even carry themselves differently afterwards because they feel so great. It’s a good feeling”.
